Volunteer firefighter accused of stealing fire truck

Jan. 23, 2013, Sheshatshiu, N.L. – RCMP in central Labrador have accused a local volunteer firefighter of getting drunk and taking the town's fire truck for a joy ride.

The Mounties in Sheshatshiu say the truck was reported stolen Wednesday at 12:30 a.m.

The vehicle was soon spotted near the local school.

The undamaged vehicle was stopped, but the driver fled on foot.

The 28-year-old off-duty fireman was apprehended minutes later.

He has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, obstructing police and driving without a valid licence.
