July 12, 2013, Wabush, N.L. – The mayor of Wabush says it's now safe to drink from the municipal water supply.

Last week, Ron Barron told residents of the western Labrador town that the water wasn't safe because it could have been contaminated with aviation fuel.

The warning was issued after Barron said water bombers could land and scoop up water from the town's reservoir to fight a massive forest fire that is still burning east of the town.

On Friday, Barron issued a statement saying multiple tests have confirmed the water was not contaminated and is safe to drink.

The fire started June 23 and has consumed more than 270 square kilometres of forest.

It was still considered out of control even though no flames were visible along its perimeter today.
