Winnipeg fuel warehouse fire under control

Oct. 2, 2012, Winnipeg – A massive fire at a fuel warehouse in Winnipeg is under control.

Fire crews are still at the scene at Speedway International in St. Boniface, Man.

Platoon chief Ted Kuryluk says all that remains is the shell of a building and some trucks.

He estimates damage as $15 million.

Fire crews spent most of Monday evening in defensive mode after the huge fire shot fireballs and thick, black smoke into the air.

Hundreds of nearby residents were evacuated, but city officials gave the all-clear signal around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and people went home.

At one point Monday night a tanker truck full of methane exploded, causing some concerns.

There were no injuries.

"It's basically totally devastated, a shell of a building, (the) shell of a number of trucks and equipment, and some rail cars; the rail cars are still intact," said Kuryluk.

"We're not sure about the product inside just yet."

The chief said the fire kept getting bigger and bigger, forcing fire officials to move the command post back twice.
