Aug. 24, 2011, Winnipeg – Almost 450 homeowners in central areas of Winnipeg have been told by firefighters to clean up garbage on their properties that could attract arsonists.

Firefighters have been scouring back lanes, checking for anything that could be used by a firebug to start a blaze.

Besides homes, they've notified officials to clean up potentially troublesome garbage on nearly 200 city-owned sites, including back lanes, curbs and vacant land.

Crews have also identified 17 commercial properties, including apartment blocks and rooming houses, that will be subject to a safety review.
