The early-evening incident at the Aldex Chemicals plant occurred in an industrial park.
Police spokesman Guy Rousseau says no one was injured in the explosion at the plant about 80 kilometres east of Montreal.
Firefighters remain at the scene and police have set up a perimeter around the site.
The smoke forced evacuations of businesses and homes within a kilometre of the plant.
The cause of the blast isn't known.
"There were people in the plant when the explosion occurred but now there's no people there and we have confirmation that nobody's injured,'' Rosseau said.
