Fire reported aboard Labrador ferry, no one injured

July 10, 2013, Nain, N.L. – Passengers aboard a ferry that serves the north coast of Labrador were told to gather at the ship's fire stations Wednesday when a fire broke out bellow deck.

July 10, 2013, Nain, N.L. – Passengers aboard a ferry that serves the north coast of Labrador were told to gather at the ship's fire stations Wednesday when a fire broke out bellow deck.

The province's Transportation Department says no one was injured and the fire was quickly extinguished by the crew of the MV Northern Ranger.

It says the fire started in the ship's port shaft generator.

The ship was on its way to Nain, the most northerly community in Labrador.

Once the fire was out, the ferry continued on to its destination.

The ferry's operator, CAI Nunatsiavut Marine Inc., says it expects no interruption in service.

The company's website says the ferry can carry 131 passengers, but the number of passengers who were on board the vessel at the time the of the fire wasn't released in a statement issued by the Transportation Department.
