Introducing Kaslo’s new fire chief

March 22, 2024, Kaslo, B.C. — Eric Graham is Kaslo’s new full-time fire chief. Graham brings 21 years of experience in three different fire departments.

He loves his job as a firefighter. “Without a doubt, I can confidently say that this is the best job in the world!” he told the Valley Voice.

Graham was inspired to become a firefighter by firefighter friends of his. When he joined his local fire department in 2003, he soon made the transition from hospitality and tourism to emergency services and public safety.

“It didn’t take long for me to realize that being a firefighter was my true calling,” he said. “Serving my community in this capacity filled me with great pride.”

In his new role, Graham will work to deliver top-notch service to the community, he says.

“The Kaslo Fire Department boasts a dedicated team of firefighters who are deeply committed to serving their community,” he said. “I am honoured to be a part of that.”

Beyond administrative tasks, some of his duties will include responding to calls, training and supporting firefighters, conducting fire inspections, and educating the public on fire and life safety.

The position used to be part-time. RDCK Regional Fire Chief David Zayonce explained that the Kaslo fire chief job has evolved to full-time to meet the daily demands of the job. The other members of the department are volunteers, but they are paid for training time and emergency call-outs.

Graham originally hails from Saskatoon but spent his formative years in Regina. After completing his education, he moved to Vancouver Island, where he lived for almost two decades. Graham then worked for five years with Creston Fire Rescue, and spent 2018 as Deputy Fire Chief in Lacombe, Alberta.

“Though it was a valuable experience, I found myself yearning to return to British Columbia,” he said.

Graham is thrilled to be in Kaslo. He finds the community incredibly warm and friendly, with a fantastic atmosphere.

When he’s not wearing his fire chief hat, Graham loves spending time outdoors and is eagerly looking forward to exploring the area. He enjoys running, mountain biking, hiking, and other pursuits that keep him active.

“Being on the water is something I particularly relish,” he said. “I’ve owned surfboards and kayaks, and most recently I acquired a paddle board.”

Graham said he’s always up for a nice long walk, too.
