Driver dies as truck plunges into lake

August 12, 2013, Burlington, Ont. – A man is dead after the pickup truck
he was driving plunged into Lake Ontario in Oakville early this
morning.

Police say the pickup crashed through a guard rail and
went into the water around 12:30 a.m. (near Lakeshore Road and Burloak
Drive).

Halton Regional Police say two firefighters
were able to swim to the fully submerged truck and bring the driver to
shore.

The 43-year-old Burlington man was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the truck had been sitting in three metres of water and was located 45 metres from dry land.

It took about 10 hours for police to remove the truck from the water.

Police added that the Ministry of Environment was notified because of oil and petroleum at the scene.

They say the driver's next of kin has requested his name not be released.

Police are still investigating the collision.
