Fire destroys former hospital in Manitoba
Jan. 18, 2016, Glenboro, Man. - A fire has destroyed a large, century-old home that once served as a hospital in a southern Manitoba community.
Fire Chief Steve Bjornson of the Glenboro-South Cypress Fire Department says firefighters were called to the home in Glenboro on Saturday evening.
When they arrived, he says they moved into a defensive mode and were concerned the wires and poles around the home could catch fire, knocking out power to a nearby seniors' home and hospital.
A man had been maintaining the home while the owner was in Jamaica and was able to escape the blaze.
Bjornson says the home was once a hospital, then a personal care unit and then turned back into a residence.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
