August 14, 2012, Calgary – A home under construction has been destroyed and two neighbouring houses have been heavily damaged by a fire in Calgary.

No one was hurt when the fire erupted overnight in a southeast neighbourhood.

Firefighters say the first home was engulfed in flames when they got to the scene and that blaze had spread to the two adjacent houses.

A call was put out for extra personnel and equipment before the first crews arrived because the flames could be seen for several blocks.

People in the area were awakened by explosions that sounded like gunshots coming from the first home.

A number of houses in the area were evacuated as a precaution and about 30 people were given temporary shelter on transit buses until the situation stabilized.
