Fire destroys town's only grocery store
Aug. 11, 2017, Bissett, Man. - The only grocery store in a small northeastern Manitoba community has been destroyed by a fire.
Bissett Deputy Mayor Doug McPherson, who is also a firefighter, says the blaze broke out at Wynne's Place at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
The community's volunteer fire department responded, but McPherson says the fire was already fully involved.
No one was hurt.
McPherson tells CTV Winnipeg the fire means residents will have to drive 120 kilometres to the nearest grocery store.
He says essential groceries will be brought in to the community's gas station but residents in the town 250 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg will miss getting their morning coffee from the store.
"That's where they used to go to solve the world's issues. That's not going to be happening now. People have been doing that for 30, 40 years," McPherson said Thursday.
"It's definitely going to be a hit, but we take it in stride. We've had problems here before with different things, but it's a close knit community so everybody helps everybody else out."
